Nick Thurwanger, CFA

Founder, Chief Investment Officer

Nick is passionate about helping people build paths to their dreams through prudent, independent financial analysis, financial planning, investment/portfolio management, and financial education.  Nick has over 15 years of experience managing investments with a very strong track record of performance. Before founding Eagle Bluffs Wealth Management, Nick was the Chief Investment Officer for Landmark Bank’s Wealth Management department in Columbia, MO for over 8 years.  During his tenure, the department grew from under $350 million in assets to over $850 million in assets and over 700 relationships. Prior to holding that position, Nick was a Portfolio Manager at one of the largest global wealth managers while he lived in Los Angeles for over 6 years, where he served a dual role: managing his client’s portfolios and the client relationships as a whole.  In 2009, Nick received the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. (Click here to learn more about the CFA designation) Nick earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in business from Iowa State University in 2004; he also studied at the University of Newcastle in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia in 2003.

Nick founded Eagle Bluffs Wealth Management to forge deeper relationships with a smaller group of clients and to provide concierge-level services and education to those clients.  As the Chief Investment Officer of Eagle Bluffs, he can not only continue to manage investments, as he has in the past, but also leverage the substantial resources of a global custodian who currently holds over $1.5 trillion in assets.

Nick was born in Iowa and reared in Illinois and Iowa.  He is married to Dr. Heather K. Hunt, an Associate Professor in Biomedical, Biological & Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri.  They have a young daughter who currently aspires to be an engineer, a lawyer (because all princesses must be lawyers), and a medal-winning runner.  Not surprisingly, Nick is an avid runner who enjoys running marathons (as much as anyone can enjoy running a marathon); he also loves biking, camping, and preserving unique and wild spaces for future generations’ use.  He also enjoys working with his daughter in the family’s shop to design and build furniture and to create beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces for their family to enjoy. You will most often see Nick and his family on the trails in Columbia, especially the MKT trail, as the trail is their preferred method for commuting to work and school.

Jo Mooney

Relationship Manager
Jo solo-2.jpg

No two clients are alike, and Jo knows that.  Jo is known for treating each relationship independently, with personal attention and care, meeting clients where they are, and walking with them through every stage of their lives as a trusted partner and supporter.  Jo’s extensive, 28-year background in banking and trust planning enables her to provide critical advice at timely moments to her clients regarding estate planning, maintaining, and growing generational wealth, and charitable giving.  Her long-held relationships with many estate planning attorneys and CPAs in the area make her the ideal resource for our clients at any point in the estate and trust planning process. To Jo, trust planning and taking care of clients is not just a career - it is a vocation.

Jo began her wealth management career directly out of college as a Trust Receptionist at a local bank.  She advanced throughout the department, holding various positions in both investments and personal trust administration, where she ultimately found her passion.   She graduated from National Trust School and National Graduate Trust School, all while honing additional skills as a trust officer.  Now, as a Wealth Advisor with Eagle Bluffs Wealth Management, she is excited to work with an elite group of clients to help them and their families with planning needs.  As Jo puts it, “Prior proper planning prevents poor performance.”  She ensures that each of her clients is presented with appropriate estate and financial planning tools and plans to meet their individual goals, and she takes pride in assuring that regardless of account size, each client is given the personal service, attention, and professional management they expect and deserve.

Jo was born and reared in Columbia and now enjoys watching her two children grow up in the same community that she did. While she earned her Business degree from Truman State University, she realized her roots were back home and thus returned to raise her family and help those around her.  Jo’s son Brett attends Columbia College and plays baseball, while her daughter Kayla is at Rock Bridge High School and plays softball.  Jo’s passion for her family means that she can usually be found following her kids to and from ballgames, year-round, or spending time on the family farm, hunting or fishing.  Jo enjoys family time but also likes relaxing at home and soaking up the outdoor sunshine.  She is a member of the Margaret Hart Circle of Kings Daughters, the Mid-Missouri Estate Planning Council, and in 2005 she was named one of Columbia’s “40 Under 40” by the Columbia Business Times and was spotlighted as one of the “People You Should Know” in that publication.
